About
The Video Game Dictionary explains the words, genres, mechanics and slang you meet in video games, in plain English. It is written for people who are new to gaming as well as for long-time players who want a quick, clear definition.
What you will find
Every entry follows the same layout: a one-line definition, a longer explanation, where the term comes from, an example and a fact worth knowing. Entries cover genres and game types, mechanics and design terms, hardware and platforms, industry and business language, and the slang that players and streamers use every day.
How the entries are written
The entries are drafted with the help of AI tools and then put through checks before they are published. We aim to be accurate, and we avoid guessing at origins or dates when the real answer is uncertain. Mistakes can still slip through, especially in the history of gaming slang and in details about specific games and consoles.
