Achievement

Quick definition:A reward, often shown as a badge or trophy, that a game or platform grants when a player completes a specific challenge, such as finishing a level or defeating a particular enemy.

Meaning

An achievement is a recorded accomplishment, usually shown as a small icon with a title and a description. Some are simple, such as finishing the first level, while others demand great skill, patience or luck, such as completing a game without taking damage.

On many platforms, achievements are linked to a player profile and carry points, so that a total score reflects progress across an entire library. The rewards are often only cosmetic or for bragging rights, though a few games unlock extra content in return.

Players who collect achievements as a main goal are sometimes called achievement hunters or completionists. Their pursuit can encourage exploration of corners that a casual player would miss, but it can also lead to repetitive tasks, and some developers add joke achievements or hidden ones to keep the list entertaining.

Origin:Achievements in the modern sense were introduced as a system on game consoles and computer platforms in the 2000s, tracking player accomplishments across many games with a shared score. Earlier games had unlockable rewards and in-game medals, but the idea of a single profile collecting them became widespread after platform holders adopted it.
Example:Leila finishes a racing game and a small banner appears saying she has completed every track on the hardest setting. The achievement adds points to her profile, which her friends can see. She then notices another one for driving through a hundred puddles and decides to hunt for it before she moves on.
Did you know?Achievements changed how some people play, with dedicated hunters collecting every reward in a game. Critics say they can turn play into a checklist, while supporters say they suggest new goals, reward curiosity and give players a reason to revisit games they might otherwise have finished.
