Early access
A release model in which a game is sold to players while it is still being developed, giving them access to an unfinished version in return for support and feedback.
Easter egg
A hidden message, joke, character, item or feature deliberately placed in a game by its creators, which players may discover only by chance, by exploring thoroughly or by following obscure clues.
Emote
A short animation, gesture or expression that a player can trigger for their character, used to communicate feelings, greet others, celebrate or simply have fun.
Emulator
Software or hardware that imitates one computer or console so that games designed for the original system can be played on a different device, such as a modern PC or phone.
End game
The final phase of a game, or the content available to players after finishing the main story, usually aimed at the most experienced and dedicated players.
Endless runner
A type of game in which the character runs forward automatically through a never-ending course, and the player must jump, dodge or slide to avoid obstacles for as long as possible.
Environmental storytelling
A way of telling a story through the setting itself, using details such as objects, damage, notes and layout to hint at what happened without any dialogue.
Escort mission
A mission in which the player must guide and protect a computer-controlled character safely to a destination, usually while enemies try to harm them.
Esports
Organised, competitive video gaming in which professional or amateur players and teams compete in tournaments and leagues, often for prizes and in front of large audiences.
Expansion pack
A paid add-on that adds substantial new content to an existing game, such as new areas, characters, quests or features, usually released some time after the original.
Experience points
A number that measures a character's progress, earned by defeating enemies, completing quests and other achievements, and used to raise the character's level.
Extra life
A bonus that gives the player an additional attempt, so that one more defeat can be survived before the game ends, usually collected or earned as a reward.
Extraction shooter
A multiplayer shooting game in which players enter a dangerous map, collect valuable items and must reach an exit alive to keep them, risking everything they carry.
