Easter egg

Quick definition:A hidden message, joke, character, item or feature deliberately placed in a game by its creators, which players may discover only by chance, by exploring thoroughly or by following obscure clues.

Meaning

An Easter egg is a small secret tucked into a game for players to find. It might be a joke, a reference to another work, a hidden character, a message from the development team or an unusual reaction to an odd action. Finding one gives the pleasure of discovery, since it is not required to finish the game.

Developers include them for fun, as a signature, or to reward curiosity. Some are simple, such as a hidden object in a room, while others involve elaborate puzzles that entire communities work together to solve. Players often share discoveries through videos, forums and wikis, which has made secrets harder to keep hidden for long.

The term should not be confused with a cheat code or an unlockable feature that the game openly advertises. An Easter egg is meant to be a surprise, and part of its charm lies in how unlikely it is that a casual player will ever see it.

Origin:The name borrows from the traditional Easter egg hunt, in which eggs are hidden for children to find. It is widely associated with an early home console adventure game from the late 1970s, whose designer secretly placed his name in a hidden room, and the publisher's staff are said to have coined the label afterwards.
Example:While exploring a quiet corner of a fantasy town, Dev notices a poster that looks slightly different from the others. Interacting with it plays a short joke song and unlocks a silly hat for his character. He posts about it online, and within hours, other players are racing to find the same hidden spot.
Did you know?Hidden credits, secret developer rooms and references to other works are common types. Easter eggs are not limited to games, since hidden surprises also appear in films, websites and software.
