Fall damage
Harm taken by a character who falls from a height onto the ground, usually increasing with the distance fallen and sometimes causing defeat if the drop is high enough.
Farming
Repeating an activity, such as defeating the same enemies or visiting the same place, to gather resources, experience or items, or the act of growing crops in a game.
Fast travel
A feature that lets a player jump instantly or quickly between distant locations they have already discovered, skipping the journey across the game world.
Fetch quest
A task in which a character is asked to find and bring back a particular object or items, usually requiring little more than searching and travelling.
Field of view
The extent of the game world visible on screen at one time, usually measured as an angle, which affects how wide or narrow the view appears.
Fighting game
A genre in which two players, or a player and the computer, control fighters in close combat, using timed attacks, blocks and special moves to drain the opponent's health bar.
Final boss
The last and usually toughest enemy in a game, whose defeat completes the main story and often triggers the closing sequence and credits.
First-party
Describes games, accessories or services made by the company that owns the console or platform they run on, as opposed to those made by outside companies.
First-person shooter
A genre in which the player sees through the eyes of the character, aiming and firing weapons from a first-person viewpoint, usually in three-dimensional levels.
Fog of war
A mechanic that hides parts of the map the player has not explored or cannot currently see, so that enemy positions and movements remain unknown.
Frame rate
The number of images a game draws on screen each second, usually measured in frames per second, which affects how smooth the movement looks and how quickly the game responds.
Free-to-play
A business model in which a game can be downloaded and played without paying up front, with the developer earning money through optional purchases or advertising.
Friendly fire
Damage dealt to a player's own teammates by their weapons or attacks, whether accidental or deliberate, in games where allies share the same battlefield.
