Cheat code

Quick definition:A secret sequence of buttons, letters or words entered into a game to unlock an advantage, a hidden feature or a change in how the game works.

Meaning

A cheat code is an input that activates a hidden effect. It might give unlimited health, extra resources, a level select or silly changes such as altered gravity. The code is usually entered through the controller on a menu screen, or typed into a console window on a computer.

Many started as debugging aids for developers. By leaving them in, studios gave players secrets to share, and magazines and websites collected them. Using one often disables achievements or saving, as the game treats the result as less than a fair run through its challenges.

Cheat codes are different from cheating in online games, which breaks the rules and unfairly affects other players. In single-player games, codes harm no one, and many players use them to relax, experiment or see content they might otherwise miss because it is too difficult to reach.

Origin:Cheat codes began as testing tools that developers built into games to skip levels or gain extra lives while checking their work. Some were left in at release and shared by players through magazines and word of mouth. The word code refers to the specific button sequence needed to activate the effect.
Example:On a rainy afternoon, Callum finds a note in a magazine listing a code of directional buttons. He enters it on the title screen, hears a chime and discovers that his character now has thirty lives. His brother, impressed, copies the sequence onto a scrap of paper for later.
Did you know?Cheat codes were once passed around playgrounds, magazines and phone lines. Today, many games have replaced them with built-in difficulty options or unlockables, and some codes survive as tributes. A famous string of directional presses still turns up as a hidden joke in many modern games.
