Combo

Quick definition:A sequence of moves, hits or actions performed in quick succession so that each one follows the last without a gap, usually earning extra damage, points or bonuses.

Meaning

A combo rewards players for linking actions together. In a fighting game, it means a string of attacks that the opponent cannot block or avoid once the first one lands, because each hit leaves them stunned for long enough to be struck again. Games often show a running counter so that the length of the chain is clear.

Some combos are simple and taught in tutorials, while others demand precise timing measured in single frames, the individual images that make up each second of play. Advanced players study how many frames each move takes and practise long sequences for hours. A combo that the opponent has no way of escaping is often called a true combo.

Outside fighting games, the word has a looser meaning. It can describe a multiplier that grows with each success, a chain reaction of matched pieces, or a streak of hits in time with music.

Origin:Combo is short for combination, a word used for any set of things joined together. In games, it is often said to have grown out of fighting games, where players discovered that certain attacks could be chained before an opponent recovered. Designers then built the idea in on purpose, and the term spread to many other genres.
Example:Sam presses punch twice, then a kick, then launches his opponent into the air with an uppercut and strikes again before the fighter lands. The screen shows a counter reaching six hits, and a large chunk of the opponent's health bar disappears. His friend, who never saw an opening, groans and asks how to escape such a sequence.
Did you know?A combo is not always about fighting. Puzzle games reward chains of cleared pieces, rhythm games count unbroken streaks of correct notes, and some action games rank how long a player can keep up stylish attacks. In most cases, taking damage or pausing too long breaks the chain.
