Hero shooter

Quick definition:A multiplayer shooting game in which each player chooses a character with unique abilities and a defined role, and teams succeed by combining those characters rather than relying on weapons alone.

Meaning

In a hero shooter, the character matters as much as the weapon. Each hero has a particular set of abilities, such as healing allies, building barriers, moving quickly or striking from a distance, and players choose one before or during a match. The result is a game where cooperation between different roles is encouraged.

Most are played in teams and centred on objectives, such as capturing a point or escorting a vehicle. Heroes usually come with a signature powerful ability, charged over time, that can turn a fight. Because every hero has strengths and weaknesses, balance is a constant concern for developers, who adjust numbers through regular updates.

The term is informal, and not everyone agrees on which games belong to it. Some players argue that it simply describes a character-based shooter, while others see it as a distinct genre with its own expectations.

Origin:The label became common in the 2010s as a way of describing team shooters that borrowed ideas from role-based online battle games, giving each playable character a distinct kit of powers instead of a shared set of guns. Earlier class-based shooters used similar ideas, so the boundaries of the genre are loosely defined and debated.
Example:Before a match begins, Omar picks a character who can place a protective barrier, since his team already has two fast attackers. During the fight, he shields his allies while they push towards the objective. His teammate switches to a healer when the opposing side starts winning, and the balance of the match shifts.
Did you know?Heroes are usually grouped into roles such as damage dealers, protectors and supporters, and many games let players switch characters during a match to counter the opposition. This switching creates a constant guessing game over which choices work best against the enemy team.
